In 1811, Martin Staley transferred land here tohis son Valentine. A year later, his son formedthe town of Mount (Mt.) Airy, sometimes referredto as Staleytown. The tract was divided into about72 lots, including Main Street, Cross Street, and apublic square. Following Valentine Staley's deathin 1817, his wife and children successfully petitionedthe General Assembly to sell more lots. With theestablishment of a nearby railroad center at whatbecame Rural Retreat and an attack on MountAiry by Federal troops during the Civil War,Mount Airy ceased to exist about 1875.
