1864

— Philomathian Heritage Plaque —

This stone building was erected in 1864 by Frederick X. Hebrank. The basement housed a brewery which utilized a large well in the southwest corner. Family living quarters were on the first floor and the porch and second story were added at a later date.

During a Cheyenne Indian raid in 1868, the women and children living east of the Neosho River were safely barricaded in the brewery.

  1. The marker text identifies the wrong name. It was Francis Xavier Hebrank, not Frederick, who started the brewery.
