— Philomathian Heritage Plaque —

Built in 1857 by Seth Hays on the site of the first permanent building (1848) in Council Grove. The original log cabin was also known as the Hays House. Used continuously as a restaurant, this building was also used for church services, court proceedings and the printing of the first newspaper in town.
