The village of Brownsburg, established on23 November 1793, is an enduring example ofa mid- to late-19th-century Shenandoah Valleycommunity. By 1835 Brownsburg was a thriving commercial hub and was centrally locatedon the stagecoach line between Staunton andLexington. Brownsburg Academy, a privatePresbyterian high school for young men, wasbuilt with funds raised by local residents. TheAcademy operated as a private institutionfrom 1850 to 1877 and its building was usedfor classes, religious services, and publicmeetings. A portion of Brownsburg was listedas a historic district on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register ofHistoric Places in 1973.
