James Augustus Buchanan commissioned thebuilding of this home, completed in 1875. Thebricks used in its construction were fired inkilns on the property. The exterior walls arethree bricks deep, and the interior staircaseand banister are solid walnut.

Subsequent to the death of James AugustusBuchanan, the house was conveyed to hisdaughter, Mary Walker Buchanan Blakemore.Upon her death, the house was conveyed toher only son, John Augustus Blakemore. Uponhis death, the house was conveyed to hisdaughter, Martha Buchanan Blakemore McCrary.In 2006, the house was conveyed to Emory& Henry College.
