The C?t? family's ancestors arrived in Quebec in 1634. In 1945, Joseph Napoleon C?t? and his wife Camille Demers, along with their son Joseph Henri C?t? and his wife Anne-Marie Forcade settled in Victoria.
The C?t? family retained their Quebec heritage through their commitment to the French language and their involvement in the Francophone culture in Victoria. As active members of the parish of St. Jean Baptiste in Fairfield the family helped launch the St. Jean Baptiste Foundation and build a community room adjacent to the church. The C?t? family also assisted in protecting Victoria's historical St. Ann's Academy.
Here in James Bay, the C?t? family purchased 10, 20, 24 and 28 Douglas Street. The houses were renovated including the addition of the hexagon windows and the miniature replica of the Beacon Hill Lighthouse, both unique signatures of Mr. Henri C?t?. Over the years, the lighthouse came to symbolize to many residents the sense of home and warmth offered by the family.Henri C?t? and his family embodied a sense of community that continues today for the residents of Douglas Street and the Francophone community in Victoria. The province of British Columbia is proud to honour their legacy.
