Honey Springs

— July 17, 1863 —

"We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have fallen in vain"

This commemorative marker is is dedicated to the memory of the Union soldiers who bravely fought and died here on July 17, 1863. Major General James G. Blunt began moving 3000 Union troops south on the Texas Road on July 15 to prevent a Confederate attack on Fort Gibson. The Battle of Honey Springs took place north of the depot where 5000 Confederate troops were deployed along the road. Despite desperate Confederate resistance, Blunt's troops forced a Confederate retreat and earned a Union victory.
