The Upper East Side, today one of the world's most elegant residential and shopping districts, was first built up following the creation of nearby Central Park between 1857 and 1877. It has gone through several development phases, each of them distinctive and still represented today. Middle-class brownstones in the Italianate and Neo- [illegible] 1860's to the 1880's [illegible] exist in some of the streets. [Balance of sign only partly legible, please help decipher it!]
