Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve
The construction of a monument honoring Andrew Jackson and his troops was the first step in recognizing the importance of the battlefield and saving it for future generations. In 1852 the Louisiana legislature appropriated funds to purchase land at the battlefield and monument there. project was plagued with funding problems for decades and was finally completed in 1908. Maintenance was turned over to the Chalmette Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812. In 1939 Chalmette National Historical Park was created and the site became part of the National Park Service.HM Number | HM1TY1 |
