The U.S.S. Peto was the first submarine built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. On 2 April 1943 she left Brisbane, Australia, to begin her first patrol. By the end of the war Peto had completed 10 patrols and was credited with sinking 7 ships totalling 29,139 tons. She earned the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service [sic - Campaign] Medal and 8 Battle Stars during these patrols. In March 1946 the Peto was put in reserve, and in 1960 was stricken from the Naval Register.
