Travel on the Toll Road remained difficult due to the road's roughness. Pulling heavy loads over the road's two summits often fell upon oxen, The crack of the bullwhacker's whip and snort of laboring beasts were common sounds. You may still see faint scars of the original Toll Road on the steep hillside of the Corkscrew Grade.
Additional animals were often needed to pull heavy wagons over this mountain summit. Teams pulling more than one wagon were forced to make the ascent towing one at a time. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) rerouted the Toll Road in order to avoid the steep climb. The original Toll Road rejoins the Custer Motorway Adventure Road at Greenwood Station.
