Winter Wildlife—Some animals that live around the pond remain active, foraging for food to sustain them in the winter. A thick layer of fat keeps them warm, and provides energy reserves when food is hard to find. Most animals within the pond become inactive.

In the Pond—Frogs and turtles burrow into the mud beneath and around the pond until March or April, occasionally becoming active on warmer days. Sunfish, catfish and largemouth bass cluster at the bond bottom, slowing their metabolism.

On and Around the Pond—Watch for Canada geese and mallards swimming in open water between patches of ice, or walking on the ice or adjacent shore. Thick layers of fat and extra feathers keep them warm. Look for tracks of birds, red fox and deer on snow covered ice, or in the snow along the pond edge and nearby stream. Cardinals, blue jays and small birds like sparrows, titmice and finches take shelter in evergreen trees around the pond edge.
