Locomotora diesel-electrica FT.
Unidad A, SBC-2203

Unit A, SBC-2203

In 1939 the General Motors Corporation (GMC) and the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) set out to design and build a locomotive that could be mass produced and that any railroad could order with only minor variations to be used in various situations, such as desert areas with water shortages or mountainous areas. The result was the locomotive model FT, and with its arrival began the transition from steam traction locomotives to diesel-electric traction systems. For the first time there was a locomotive for cargo service capable of replacing, in an advantageous way, the large Mallet-type steam locomotives. Also, during the Second World War, the United States War Production Ministry allowed these companies to produce only FT locomotives.
The FT locomotive was built in 1944 and the original idea for its operation was that type A and B locomotives would be operated coupled in pairs to produce more power. It rendered service with the Northern Pacific American railway with the number 6010 and later, in 1964, it was acquired by the Sonora Baja California Railroad, along with unit B, with the number 2203, to run between Benjamín Hill, Sonora, and Pascualitos, Baja California
