Máquina 601Esta locomotora fue construida en.1910 en Alemania por las compañías Orenstein & Koppel y Arthur Koppel. A.G., y es una de las cinco que de su tipo existen en México. Fue adquirida por la Secretaría de Guerra y Marina de México en octubre del mismo año. En 1917 fue puesta en servicio por la empresa Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México y funcionó por combustión de aceite con un tanque adecuado para el uso de ese combustible. En imágenes fotográficas fechadas en 1949 aparece la locomotora con modificaciones en su chimenea y en la caja para leña. Se encuentra ubicada en el almacén de concentración de los talleres de Nonoalco en el Distrito Federal. Posteriormente, durante muchos años permaneció sobre un pedestal cercano a la estación de pasajeros de Buenavista en la ciudad de México como un monumento a la era del vapor u símbolo de ésta, hasta que el 25 de junio de 1999 fue trasladada a este museo, con el fin de preservarla y que formara parte de la colección más importante del patrimonio ferroviario de nuestro país.

English translation:Engine 601This locomotive was built in 1910 in Germany by the Orenstein & Koppel and Arthur Koppel, A.G. companies. It is one of the five of its kind that still exists in Mexico. It was acquired by the Secretary of War and Navy of Mexico in October of the same year. In 1917 it was commissioned by the National Railroads of Mexico (Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México) and operated by oil combustion with a tank suitable for the use of that fuel. In photographic images dated 1949 the locomotive appears with modifications in its chimney and a box for firewood. In the photo it was located in the Nonoalco workshop warehouse in the Federal District. Later, for many years it was placed on a pedestal near the Buenavista passenger station in Mexico City as a monument to the steam age or
as a symbol of it, until June 25, 1999 when it was transferred to this museum, with the purpose of preserving it and having it as a part of the most important collection of railway heritage in our country.
