Built in 1899 for Alfred S. Bennett, this 2 1/2 story home is the largest, most elaborate and best preserved example of architecture showing the Queen Anne style in The Dalles.
Designed by C.H Crandall and built by Hansen Thompson, the building is sheathed in vertical and horizontal siding as well as fish scale and patterned shingles. Characteristic of the style are the veranda, rounded bay and hip roof with gable, cupola, tower and turret. The ornate wrought iron fence, retaining wall and plantings are original to construction or period. The carriage house was added later.
Bennett, an Oregon State Supreme Court Justice, Wasco County Judge and a congressional candidate died in 1925. He was survived by his widow Mary, son Alfred M., and daughter Crystal. Two other daughters, Anita and Emma, tragically preceded him in death.
