A Continuing Tradition
At the founding of Chautauqua in 1874, John Heyl Vincent assigned to Dr. W.W. Wythe the task of creating Palestine Park, starting with a makeshift temporary wooden model. The park has evolved to its present permanent location and depicts the geography of the region from Dan in the north to Beer-Sheba in the south. A guide book to the park may be obtained at the Chautauqua bookstore. This map of palestine park has been made possible by the Mrs. Robert D. Campbell audio-visual fund of the Chautauqua Institution, Inc. The Chautauqua Institution honors the memory of Mrs. Campbell whose selfless generosity for Chautauqua continues for the benefit of all. Palestine in Biblical times. Geography of the Park. From this spot, you are looking from the south to the north, with Chautauqua Lake representing the Mediterranean Sea. The large mound of stones represents Mount Hermon from which flows the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. Small markers indicate towns and villages. The park is at a scale of 1.75 feet to the mile. The interpretive program at Palestine Park is made possible in part by the reverend Noel A. Calhoun Jr. fund of the Chautauqua Institution, Inc. which honors the memory of Dr. Calhoun, dedicated park tour guide from 1987 to 1994.HM Number | HM27M5 |
