Bate's Brigade - Brigadier General William B. Bate.
Clayton's Brigade - Brigadier General Henry D. Clayton.


Clayton's brigade crossed the Chickamauga at Tredford's Ford soon after nightfall September 18th, followed early on the 19th by the remaining brigades. The division moved westward in column of brigades and formed with Clayton's brigade in front on the left of the front line of Bushrod Johnson's division at this point. The Eufaula battery was advanced and opened fire upon General Crittenden's front towards Lee and Gordon's mill, evoking an immediate response which caused some loss. At noon the division was ordered to the right to support Cheatham then heavily engaged with Johnson's division of McCook's Corps and Palmer's of Crittenton's Corps and moved rapidly in that direction. Gracie's and Kelly's brigades of Preston's division were then advanced to the line upon which the Eufaula battery had been posted, near the observation tower.
