After assassinating Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth fled on horseback to Prince George's County. He was aided by Mary Surratt and stopped at her tavern in Surrattsville (now known as Clinton). Though many today believe she was innocent, Mary Surratt was hung for her alleged role in the affair. The Surratt House is now a museum.
