" less than four mortars were planted for the purpose of shelling our rifle pits, and the battery at Bennetts stables immediately opposite, but these after firing steadily for several days & nights, without doing us the slightest damage, finally ceased their operations and were probably moved."
—1st Lieutenant Frederick Y. Dabney

Named for quartermaster officer Major William K. Bennett, Bennett's Redoubt guarded the important Confederate slaughter pen operation which he commanded. Infantry units serving at Bennett's Redoubt consisted of the 10th and 12th Arkansas and supported a section of Watson's Louisiana Battery. Manning a 12-pounder howitzer and a 6-pounder gun, the cannoneers dueled with Union artillery located on the other side of Foster Creek atop Artillery Ridge.
