New York City Designated Landmark
Prominent Banker Philip Lehman, a son of the founder of the Lehman Brothers banking firm, commissioned this elegant Beaux-Arts town house in 1899-1900 at a time when this area of Manhattan was transforming into a fashionable neighborhood. Architect J H. Duncan, who also created the General Grant National Memorial and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Arch in Brooklyn, designed a rusticated limestone façade with luxuriant relief carving surmounted by an elaborately designed two-story mansard roof. When many mansions were converted to commercial and apartment use after World War I, the Lehman residence remained in the family. With its exuberant design, this town house is a distinguished reminder of the fine residences that lined the blocks west of Fifth Avenue at the turn of the century.HM Number | HM2E5J |
