In the 1550s, during the reign of the Catholic Queen, Mary, 17 Protestants were burned to death in Lewes. They died in front of the Star Inn, now the Town Hall, in the High Street. This Obelisk was built in 1889 as a memorial to the martyrs. It stands on Cliffe Hill, overlooking Lewes.
