From the Great Hall

Excavations suggest that the hall was rebuilt in the 13th century, up against the wall of the Shell Keep.
This large fireplace would have helped to heat the room. The fireplace is backed with re-used tiles becayse flint can shatter if it gets wet and hot. Fireplaces became common in the 12th century.
Before that a central hearth heated rooms.
