Homeland of the Iroquois

For centuries, the ancestral homeland of the Native American Iroquois included the Mohawk Valley region. French, Dutch, and British colonists sought the good graces of the Iroquois people who lived here, west of the colonial settlements.

Geology is Destiny

Over thousands of years, the Mohawk River formed the valley where you now stand. Its lowest point is known as "the Noses," is just west of this welcome center. Generations of traders and settlers were known to look to "the Noses" for easy passage west.
