1854 FlagpoleThe original flagpole was constructed from a single Oregon pine tree reaching a height of 113 feet. When first erected in the 1860's during a patriotic "Flag War" with the Central Pacific Railroad, it was considered to be the tallest freestanding flagpole west of the Mississippi River. In 1984, The City of Sacramento lowered a 120-foot fiberglass pole, seven feet into the ground to duplicate the height of the original 113-foot flagpole.
