Cleburne's Division

— Hill's Corps —

No. 36-A. ....................................... C.
Polk's Brigade
Cleburne's Division - Hill's Corps
Brigadier General Lucius E. Polk
September 19, 1863, 6:30 P.M., 2d Position

1st Arkansas - Colonel John W. Colquitt.
3rd and 5th Confederate - Colonel J. A. Smith.
2nd Tennessee - Colonel William D. Robinson.
35th Tennessee - Colonel Benjamin J. Hill.
48th Tennessee - Colonel George H. Nixon.
Calvert's (Arkansas) Battery - Lieutenant Thomas J. Key.

The Brigade, advancing from Jay's Mill on the right of Cleburne's Division, and having passed Liddell's Division some 200 yards, the left of the Brigade encountered Baldwin's Brigade of Johnson's Division strongly posted on the side of a hill behind temporary breastworks. The right of the Brigade wheeled to the left, and struck the left flank and rear of Scribner's and Starkweather's Brigades of Baird's Division, then forming on the left and rear of Johnson's Division. A severe night fight in front of this position ensued. The engagement was attended by the confusion inseparable from a night attack. Each side directed its fire by the flashes from the rifles of the other. At the end of an hour's fighting the Union line withdrew to the vicinity of the Kelly field.
