Stewart's Division

— Buckner's Corps —

Clayton's Brigade.
Stewart's Division - Buckner's Corps.
Brigadier General Henry D. Clayton.
September 20, 1863, 11 A.M., 1st Position.
18th Alabama - Lieutenant Colonel R. F. Inge.
18th Alabama - Major P. F. Hunley.
36th Alabama - Colonel Lewis T. Woodruff.
38th Alabama - Lieutenant Colonel A. R. Lankford.
Humphreys' (1st Arkansas) Battery - Captain John T. Humphreys.

The Brigade formed on this line early September 20th, as the reserve of Stewart's Division. Brown's Brigade was under the crest in front, and Bate's Brigade on the right of Brown but refused.

The Brigade followed Brown's into action about 11 o'clock, and pressed forward nearly to the Chattanooga road. From that point the whole line was obliged to retire by a front fire from Brannan and an enfilading fire from Reynolds on the right. The Brigade fell back to its morning position and remained until 5 p.m., when the direction of the lines was changed for an advance upon the works south of the Kelly field. Although the attack by the Brigades of Stewart's Division was repulsed, it was a very vigorous and determined one.
