Lee's Retreat

— April 6, 1865 —

Confederate troops began entrenching on the high ground across the road from Burkesville Junction. Upon the approach of the Union army, the forces skirmished briefly until darkness ended the fighting. General Lee headquartered here before his march to Farmville.
