Completed in 1862, this large earth fortwas designed to defend the great Unionblockade base on Hilton Head againstConfederate land attack. Named afterthe first Union commander here, Gen.Thomas W. Sherman, the fort consistsof two miles of earthworks enclosing a 14-acre area. With other forticationsFort Sherman formed part of a defensive line 5 miles long across thenorth end of the island.
