A wooden sloop, 229 feet long and with a crew of 138, she was commissioned for blockade service during the Civil War. First, she contained Confederate ships off the coast of North Carolina and later Atlantic ports in Europe. In 1865, she "bottled up" the Confederate ship Rappahannock in Calais, France and engaged the Confederate "Iron Clad" CSS Stonewall in battle off Ferrol, Spain. After the close of the Civil War, the USS Sacramento saw extensive service in the Indian Ocean until she was lost on a reef in 1867.
