Somewhere northwest of Kingstree on the night of Aug. 27, 1780, while scouting for Gen. Marion, a South Carolina militia company led by Maj. John James attacked a British force sent to ravage WilliamsburgDistrict, capturing prisoners and gaining information that decided Gen. Marion not to risk a general engagement.
