Nearby was the largest elm in New England, one of the many huge elms for which Lancaster was famous during the 18th and 19th centuries, located beside the Nashua on an old road called Lover's Lane. Measurements in 1888: circumference at 5 ft. above ground, 23 ft. 5 in.; 7 ft. above ground, 24 ft.; branch spread, 114 ft.; height, 95 ft. Eight people with arms outstretched could reach around it. A terrible wind blew the tree down in 1908.
