A founder of the "hard-bop" school of jazz, drummer Blakey grew up here, and got his start with Billy Eckstine's band. Blakey's group, "The Jazz Messengers," featured Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, and Wynton Marsalis. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Grammy, 2005.HM Number | HMWYV |
