ONEOTA
Originally the area below was called Oneota, one of several early towns which survived to form modern Duluth. Oneota was the site of the first sawmill in the region, built in 1855 at the present site of the iron ore docks. Among the early residents of Oneota were Lewis Merritt and his seven sons, known as the "seven iron men", who helped open the Mesabi Range and built one of the first railroads to transport iron ore to Lake Superior docks. At the far right is Morgan Park, former site of a large steel and cement making complex. Built in 1915, Morgan Park was one of the first planned communities in the nation. As one's eye moves eastward one sees Grassy Point; the Lake Superior Paper Company; Minnesota Power Co's Hibbard Power Plant; the Richard Bong Memorial Bridge, Wheeler Field; Wade Municipal Stadium; docks which load pellets and ore onto Lake vessels, a storage yard for taconite pellets; a panorama of St. Louis Bay (Duluth's inner harbor) to Rice's Point and the John A. Blatnik High Bridge; the Outer Harbor; Minnesota Point; and the Aerial Life [sic - Lift] Bridge; Lake Superior and the Enger Memorial Tower.

I Have Some Information
1) I have pictures: A 2015 closeup of Oneota plaque and a little wider view of the whole marker and a little of the scenic overlook where it resides. I also have a 1960 photo of my family standing at this overlook, unfortunately 12 years before the marker was placed, but still a part of the site's history.
2) The marker here is in pretty rough shape, as is the stonework of the overlook, but they are at least still intact. The concrete part of the marker appears to have had graffiti that was "hidden" by painting over it. There are four empty holes in the corners of the plaque and four relatively new-looking screws in their own holes attaching it to the concrete. The Lions Club logo plate that should be at the top center has been removed from the plaque. The holes that it was attached to are all that remains of the logo plate. In 2015, the plaque was covered with bird dung and corrosion and parts were hard to read. The stonework of the overlook itself has many areas that have obviously been repaired.
3) This marker IS part of a series. The Duluth Lions Club placed them all in 1972. There are five that I know of (and have photos of). Four of them were placed at scenic overlooks on Duluth's Skyline Parkway. The fifth one is at Brighton Beach on the Lake Superior shoreline at the mouth of the Lester River. There is one more Lions Club marker in Canal Park near the Aerial Lift Bridge, but that one is not marked as having been placed in 1972 like the others. There may have been more 1972 markers, but I have not been able to locate any history about the project or the markers.
