Additional InformationWhen Jefferson Davis served as the US Secretary of War under President Buchanan, he conceived of an idea that the Army needed a road from the Atlantic to the Pacific, for overland transportation of Army goods. This is the beginning of the idea of a transcontinental highway. Several years later as the President of the Confederacy, he resurrected this idea.
