—For Extraordinary Heroism, Courageous Sacrifice, and Distinguished Service —
Edward H. Martin lived a life of selfless service. In July 1967, as executive officer of VA-34, he was shot down by surface-to-air missiles while leading a flight of A-4 Skyhawks from the USS Intrepid against targets in North Vietnam. For almost six years, he was held captive in Hanoi where he resisted brutal torture and isolation as a prisoner of war. Admiral Martin later rose to serve as Commander of Carrier Groups Two and Four, Commander US Sixth Fleet, and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air Warfare. A southern gentleman, patriot, warrior, and family man, Ed Martin tirelessly devoted his retirement to a host of charitable and civic organizations with spirited leadership and admirable dedication.HM Number | HM27G5 |
