Fencing the Land The Smiths marked the boundary of their property with large stones gathered while clearing the land. They then built a fence over the stacked stones to keep wandering livestock out of their property. They split thousands of rails and constructed a variety of fences throughout their property to enclose and contain their animals. Remnants of the perimeter fence stone base are visible here. We had cleared up to sixty acres...and got it under good fence and cultivation. -William Smith
