Threshing Barn A barn was essential to the success of the Smith farm. Soon after moving into the log home, the likely built a threshing barn on the 100-acre farm. The wooden floor of the central bay was used to thresh grain crops like wheat, barley, rye, buckwheat, and oats. A side bay was used to store the freshly harvested shocks of grain. The other bay housed grain bins and tool storage. Hay was stored in the loft above the granary. The third harvest time [September 1823] had now arrived since we opened our new farm, and all our sons were actively employed in assisting their father to cut down the grain and storing it away in order, for winter. -Lucy Mack Smith
