In 1910 Indianapolis physician Robert Long and his wife Clara provided the funds for the construction of a hospital to serve the teaching needs of the Indiana University School of Medicine, as well as the health needs of poor patients throughout the state. The Longs' gift and the acquisition of sixteen acres at this location for the construction of the hospital were key pieces to the future development of the School of Medicine and eventually the IUPUI campus. Long Hospital was designed by the Robert P. Daggett architectural firm and completed in 1914. The university gradually converted Long Hospital to classrooms, laboratories, and clinics following the completion of University Hospital in 1970.
