Water power was an important source of energy on the nineteenth-century frontier, and served as a catalyst for economic development in Indianapolis. Settlers built several mills to grind grain and cut wood on Fall Creek, which originally flowed south through what is now the IUPUI campus. To harness the current more effectively, mill owners created a race by straightening the creek and reinforcing its banks with hewn timbers. Early streets along the mill race ran on the diagonal parallel to it. The last remnant can be seen on Beauty Street, two blocks to the west of this site.
