Walker's Corps

— Brigadier General St. John R. Liddell —

Liddell's Division, - Walker's Corps.
Brigadier General St. John R. Liddell.
September 19, 1863, 11 a.m.
Liddell's Brigade, - Colonel Daniel C. Govan.
Walthall's Brigade, - Brigadier General Edward C. Walthall.

About 10:30 a.m. General Walker ordered this division then halted on the road from Alexander's bridge to Lee and Gordon's Mill to the right to the assistance of the forces then engaged in front of Jay's Mill. Moving quickly with Walthall's Brigade on the right and Liddell's on the left the Division struck the flank of Scribber's and King's Brigades of Baird's Division threw them into confusion and captured Battery A, 1st Michigan and Battery H, 5th U.S. Artillery. While pressing the advantage gained Liddell's line was first checked by two brigades of Brannan's Division and then taken in flank by Croxton's Brigade of that Division which caused it to fall back to a position in rear of Cheatham's Division near Jay's Mill where it remained during the early afternoon.
