— Round Bottom Log —
The three-log canoe such as this was the classic oystering tonging boat of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Watermen used long-handled tongs, in a scissors-like fashion, to scoop oysters from the shallower waters of the bay and river. This canoe was built around 1875 for Capt. Hennison of St. George Island, Maryland. It was purchased in 1922 by Solomons resident Rupert Olsen, who converted the canoe to power.HM Number | HM2K4E |
