— Round Bottom Log —
Bar Dog got its name from the oyster toadfish, called "bar dogs" by watermen. This is a rare two-log canoe, built in Virginia around 1870. At some point, the canoe was converted from sail to power. It had a Palmer Bros. marine engine when it floated ashore on St. George Creek, St. Mary's County, Maryland, around 1948. Little is known about the boat's early history, but it primarily served as an oyster tonger. Note the unusually large logs and butterfly fasteners, added to keep a "check," or split, in the log from becoming wider.HM Number | HM2K4F |
