— V Bottom —
Traditionally, Chesapeake V-bottom sailing craft were commonly referred to as "bateaux," a term not much used today. This bateau was built by Capt. Ed Leatherbury (1863 - 1952) of Shadyside, Maryland, in the early 1900s and was used as part of his rental fleet on the West River. This fleet of sturdy, easy-to-sail boats was later sold to Capt. Dick Hartge. Capt. Leatherbury was a prolific builder of small bateaux and large canoes, using only his eye, rather than working from plans.HM Number | HM2K4I |
