— V Bottom —

Ernest H. "Dick" Hartge started building boats at Galesville, on the West River in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in the 1920s. He later acquired a fleet of hire boats built and formerly owned by Ed Leatherbury of nearby Shadyside. Hartge moved to Eustis, Florida, in 1961 where he continued to build boats along traditional Chesapeake lines.

Witch of the Wave, built around 1961-62, and the Wonderful, also in the museum's collection, are among eight similar rental boats, known as the Breadwinner Class, built by Hartge at Eustis in the early 1960s. The word "bateau" is traditionally used to refer to any V-bottom ("deadrise") boat larger than a skiff.
